Audition FAQ

HOW IS THE CHOIR ORGANIZED?

The choir is made up of four ensembles of a maximum of 160 choristers:  Junior Choristers (grades 3-5), Senior Choristers (grades 5-8), Graduate Choristers (grades 9-12). The Chamber/Tour Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble which performs at additional special events and represents the choir travelling nationally and internationally.

HOW DO I AUDITION?

You may click on the  Audition Tab to schedule an audition with our Music Director.  The audition consists of music games and explorations and at the conclusion, the boy is asked to sing a portion of a song he enjoys singing.  It is not necessary to bring any materials with you.

DO I NEED A MUSIC TEACHER RECOMMENDATION?

It is not necessary, but it may be helpful.  We are a civic organization and not affiliated with any school system.  Our choristers come from over fifty different schools and home school organizations across the Birmingham Metropolitan area which provides our organization rich diversity of geography, socio economics and skill levels.

WHAT SORT OF TRAINING MUST MY SON HAVE?

None.  What helps most is enthusiasm, eagerness to learn and respectful attitude.

WHY SHOULD MY SON JOIN THE BIRMINGHAM BOYS CHOIR (BBC)?

In the BBC, boys learn the joy of singing together as well as Life Lessons that extend to every decade of their lives.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Tuition is billed on an academic ten-month calendar: $108/month for Juniors, $119/month for Seniors, $76/month for Graduates.  Seniors and Graduates pay for Summer Camp which is held at the end of the summer (amount varies based on camp location). Families will also provide their own dress black pants, socks, belts and shoes for performances.  The tuition does not cover the full cost of training for each boy, so all choristers are also supported by our generous donors.

WHERE WILL MY SON ATTEND REHEARSALS AND HOW OFTEN?

Our choristers rehearse weekly at various times at the following satellites:  Chelsea-Our Savior Lutheran Church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and St. Mark United Methodist Church.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER TIME COMMITMENTS?

Prior to our Christmas and Spring Concerts our choristers will have some extra rehearsals on Thursdays and Saturdays.

There are additional Collaborative Concerts and rehearsals and Special Events for Senior and Graduate Choristers.

CAN MY SON PARTICIPATE IF HE HAS OTHER ACTIVITIES?

Certainly!  Lots of our boys are involved in sports, academic teams, and even other music organizations.  Of course, we do have attendance requirements, but time management is also a very important skill to develop and learn.

WHAT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION?

Parents provide their own transportation.  There are a lot of carpools that convene throughout the season.

ARE THERE SUMMER ACTIVITIES?

Senior and Graduate Choristers attend Summer Camp (the best week of the year!) at the end of July.  In addition, our Tour Choir will travel nationally and internationally in the odd numbered years.

HOW CAN I VIEW A CONCERT?

Please visit our website to see our performance calendar.  To see past performances, you may view videos on our dedicated You Tube Channel Birmingham Boys Choir.  In addition, you may follow us on our Facebook page Birmingham Boys Choir where we occasionally live stream performances.
